Cultures' Resource 5: Elements of Culture (Generated by 5A)





When we talk about one's culture, what exactly are we referring to?

Based on our recent discussions, homeroom 5A generated the following list of cultural elements (compiled, organized, and refined by the teacher):

Language (spoken and written)

Currency/Money: attitudes/beliefs about money

Modes of transportation

Recreation: games, sports, forms of entertainment, toys

Architecture

Arts: Dance; Music; Painting, sculpture, pottery

Holidays, festivals

Traditional stories/songs, myths, legends

Customs regarding diet, food, preparation of food, and eating

Religion: Beliefs about /rituals and customs re birth and death; Explanation of afterlife; Relationship between of Man and Nature; Concepts re divinity/the sacred; Beliefs toward superstition and the supernatural

Life in the family: Role of father, mother, children, elderly; Customs regarding celebration of birth, remembrance of deaths, marriage; Customs regarding rites of passage/initiation; Names and naming

The individual: Expression of emotion; Personal space/privacy/private property; Individualism (the individual’s desires is more important the community) versus collectivism (the community is more important that one’s individual desires); Dress (including materials) and personal adornment (make-up, tattooing, jewelry, hairstyle); Concept of beauty

The community: Greetings; Etiquette; Leadership; Schooling and education; Laws: making laws, enforcing laws (courts); Forms of government; Organization of people and groups (castes, clans); Commerce (how/what things are bought and sold)

Attitudes toward/treatment of animals

Relationship with Nature (how geography influences/shapes culture)
