The Explorer Project: Teacher Tips (end of week 1)

Danish Polar Explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Spedding tips about project work (end week 1 of 3):

= Divide your research into three areas (same as the three lines of inquiry):

The Explorer,

focusing on the explorer him/herself: their childhood, family life, early interests/talents, school, inspirations

The Exporing,

focusing on what the explorer actually did.

How the exploration changed the world,

whether large or small.

= Look for ways to subdivide these areas, as:

The Explorer

Childhood

Family Life

Early Interest

School

This may be different for each project.

= Consider including a timeline of the explorer’s life. A timeline is a great way to summarize a lot of information in a very organized way. While I haven’t looked, there are probably timeline programs or templates on-line.

= ADVANCED: Many explorers kept journal. Look for them. Include quotes in your project.

= Look for photos and video. Complete a thorough review of on-line video. A picture tells a thousand words. Look for ways of including media in your project.

= As you’re doing your research, think ahead to your presentation slides. Ask yourself, how can I condense this information into general bullet points? Would a set of detailed notes be helpful? Remember, the presentation will be assessed this time. This is your 4th PYP project, so use your previous experience to guide you now!

= Set personal goals: small daily goals, and larger weekly goals. Be strict about keeping to them. Sticking to your goals makes the whole process easier.

= Send questions as they come up. Don’t wait for your presentation to say that you couldn’t find something.

= A BIG tip. Have a piece of paper for ongoing notes, to include things like Questions, or Things To Do, or Goals. This is a very important strategy for staying organized.
